Craft Ed 2014
In March the Green-Schools committee decided to apply for the 2014 Craft ED programme. We received news at the end of March to say that our school was one of the seventy schools chosen nationwide to take part in this project. We were delighted to get this news and immediately began to discuss what we would do with our chosen crafts person. Miss Corr attended a meeting in Monaghan Education Centre in April where she found out that local jewellery designer Elena Brennan was going to work with our school. Craft ED had chosen first class to work with Elena. Elena was going to work with the class over a six week period on a 'recycling' themed project. Miss Corr, Elena and Ms Mc Carron discussed what the focus of the project could be and after much debate it was decided that we would create a 'Seasons Tree' as the children in first class had been learning about the different seasons. A request was sent out to all homes looking for any materials that could be found in their recycling bins that could be useful to our project. Elena then sifted through the 'rubbish' and decided on a structure for the tree. Miss Corr and Elena decided on a six week plan for the project during which the children would make flowers, leaves, clay creatures and butterflies. First Class really embraced the project and looked forward each week to Elena's arrival. The project had to be ready for an exhibition in Monaghan Education Centre at the end of June so it was a race against time during the last couple of weeks. Elena spent some lunchtimes working with sixth class students on the more difficult aspects of the project and eventually by the third week in June our ' Seasons Tree' was completed. The children were extremely proud of their work and the tree has been admired by all classes, teachers and visitors to the school. The tree will be on display in the school foyer for the next school year and will be the focal part of our Green-Schools Flag Raising ceremony in October. Well done to all involved!!!
A work in progress .........................

Recycled Robot
Anthony Boyko in 2nd class created a robot at home using lots of recycled materials. He brought his robot to school and his classmates had great fun playing with it. Hopefully other 2nd class students will be inspired to make their own recycled robot. Keep checking this page for photos!
The Life-cycle of a Plastic Bottle
The pupils of St. Clare's Primary School, Harold's Cross, Dublin made this very informative video about the life-cycle of a plastic bottle. It is hard to believe that so more materials are used to make just ONE plastic bottle!! We need to be sure that we reuse our plastic bottles as often as we can.
