St. Killian's N.S. Mullagh 2-11
Farnham N.S. 0-14 Saturday last, 9th November, saw one of the most exciting schools' football matches in years. It took extra time to separate these two school teams on the 3G Breffni Park. St Killian's started confidently and scored 1-3 before the Farnham boys settled. Gradually, Farnham took control and started to dominate the midfield area. Ife Makinde and Michael Veale ensured that the Farnham forwards were getting a plentiful supply of ball and the six point lead was reduced to one by half time. The second half provided exciting entertainment and many heart stopping moments for the supporters of both schools. Ife Makinde was controlling midfield and Lucas Mc Dermott was driving forward at pace from the half-back line. Some excellent points were kicked by both sides. The game was in the balance right up to the final whistle and it looked like Farnham's day until St. Killian's kicked the equalising point with one minute remaining. In the second period of extra time, a long ball into the Farnham goalmouth was palmed to the net by a St. Killian's forward. No matter how hard Farnham tried, there was no way through a packed St. Killian's defence. The entire St. Killian's players packed their goalmouth area to ensure Farnham could not get an equalising goal. The final whistle witnessed scenes of great jubilation among the Mullagh players and supported. The Farnham players were disconsolate and sank to the ground. After the St. Killian's captain was presented with the Division One Cumann na mBunscol cup, Ife Makinde received the 'Player of the Match' trophy for an outstanding individual performance. His level of skill and fitness was commented upon not only by the Farnham supporters, but also by the mentors and supporters of St. Killian's. Farnham boys can feel justifiably proud of their performance on the day. Every team member performed heroically and gave of his best. Aaron O' Connell (captain) was very sound in goals and stopped two point blank goal efforts. The full backs, Daniel Rowley and David Leddy, were rock solid and broke up many dangerous attacks. The half-back line of Emmanuel Shehu, Neil Lowry and Lucas Mc Dermott, dealt capably with a dangerous St. Killian's half-forward line. Lucas frequently carried the ball into the St. Killian's defence and scored 5 points (0-4 from frees). The midfield pairing of Ife Makinde (0-1) and Michael Veale were, after an initial slow start, outstanding and Ife deservedly received the 'Player of the Match' trophy for his non-stop efforts. Daire O'Reilly (0-2), Jack Tully (0-1) and Evan McIntyre were tireless in their work rate and continuously gave the opposition rearguard worrying moments. Leon Mulcahy (0-4), Mark Sexton (0-1) and substitute Conall Ruddy were equally effective and gave their best. Congratulations to St. Killian's on winning their first Division One title. Commiserations to our gallant Farnham team! Please come out to support our school team!
