National Proclamation Day, 15th of March 2016 was celebrated by all staff and pupils of Farnham NS.  All gathered outside on a beautiful sunny day singing Amhrán na bhFiann, while the new tricolour was raised by the youngest and oldest girls in our school.  Our skilled Trad group accompanied the singing under the direction of Ms. Markey. Fourth class appropriately dressed in their soldier costumes adding to the formality of the occasion.  Displaying a unified school everyone collectively joined to sing our finale song-Ireland’s Call. An occasion thoroughly enjoyed by all.

All the practice and rehearsing since January culminated in our whole school performance to commemorate the events of 1916 last Wednesday and Thursday 9th and 10th of March.  5th and 6th classes showed great teamwork in coming together to showcase a powerful re-enactment of the events of Easter week 1916.  There were even a few tears shed in the audience. Well done to all involved.

Fourth class summarised for us, the correlation between the events of 1916 and Ireland’s role in fighting with the British in World War 1, in a disciplined and entertaining manner. You all looked great in your soldier outfits.
Ms. Leonard organised a great display of Irish Dancing to finish part 1 of the show in an energetic way.

Part 2 of the performance saw Farnham NS put out the “welcome mat” for the many other cultures evident in our school today, as recounted by our MC, Mrs Donohoe.  We continue to embrace and include children from many nationalities in our school.  Our Junior and Senior Infants danced to African based songs in wild costumes. First class performed a Spanish and Mexican dance excellently. Second class showed great creative dance skills whilst wriggling in colouring Jai Ho Indian attire.
Third class brought us back to our Irish culture by comparing life from 1916 to modern Ireland in 2016.  Progress from being a down trodden nation to an educated one was excellently portrayed, with John F Kennedy’s words of wisdom used as a background to an amazing slideshow, showing the history of Farnham NS in the last 100 years.
Well done to all involved for a fantastic day’s entertainment.
