Daffodil Time Again!!!
Last week the new Junior Infant Class planted their daffodils along the avenue. We also planted one for our new member of staff - Mrs Dolan!! We are looking forward to watching them grow in Springtime.

Sunny Sunflowers
Our beautiful sunflowers grew very well over the summer months. It cheered everyone up to see such sunny sunflowers as we drove back up the avenue on our first day back to school. Lucas and Jonah Mc Dermott watered the flowers over the summer months and they did a fantastic job. We can now use the sunflower seeds to feed the birds in the wintertime.

In Farnham School we look after our environment in lots of ways................

School Garden

Third Class are going to look after our garden this year. As the sun shone on Friday, some third class students got stuck into some weeding!!! The garden needed to be tidied up and new compost had to be put down before they decided upon what vegetables and fruit to sow this year.

We put some new compost into our vegetable boxes

On Friday the 14th of March we planted our onion bulbs. First we put some fertiliser into the compost. Then we placed our bulbs just under the compost with the onion bulbs facing upwards. We patted the compost afterwards.
This week we planted some sunflowers in pots. We also planted some kale which we will transplant to the garden when the weather gets warmer.

This week we planted some lettuce seeds so that we can make some delicious salads in June.

Wow!!!!! When we came back after the Easter holidays we were so surprised to see how much our onions have grown. Today we transplanted our kale plants into the raised beds. We also planted some strawberries. We decided to cover our lettuce plants with newspaper as the nights are still very frosty. Lettuce plants will not grow if they are not protected from the frost.
Today we prepared the flower baskets. We have to remember to water them every day!!

Finally our sunflowers are ready to plant. Look at how much they have grown!!. We dug a hole and then put some new compost and fertiliser in. We placed the sunflower carefully in the hole and then tied it loosely to a bamboo stick. We watered it and placed some slug pellets around the bottom to keep the pesky slugs away!!!

Planting Crocuses

Miss Markey kindly donated a number of crocuses to the Green-Schools Committee. Two students from each class planted a crocus. We are looking forward to watching them blossom after the winter months.

Sarah Clarke and Oisin Hilton are feeding the birds in this photo :)
We use our bird display to identify all the common Irish birds that come for breakfast each day. Let us know what birds you can spot around Farnham School!!!
