       Energy Flag
Farnham School elected a new Green- Schools Committee in May 2013. We conducted an energy audit to find out how much energy is being used in our school. Using the information that we gathered we compiled an action plan which aimed to reduce the energy consumption in Farnham School by 5% this year.  We have lots of events planned for this year to help us achieve our energy flag. Keep checking our link on the website for the latest news!!!

Action Plan
Here is our Action Plan for the Energy Flag. Please let us know if you have any suggestions that could be added to our Action Plan. Remember the Green-Schools Project is a whole school initiative and we want to hear your opinion.

                               Green-Schools Notice Board

This is our Green-Schools Notice Board which was created by members of our committee. Make sure to have a look the next time you pass as we have some great energy saving tips on display!!

Electricity Monitors
Some of our Green-Schools Committee members write down the electricity readings each morning. At the end of each month Kate Jackson and Aaron O Connell draw up graphs so we can check and compare how much electricity we are using. Have a look at our Green-Schools notice board to see these graphs :)
Checking the Temperature
All classes have been given a thermometer for their classroom. Once the temperature goes over 19 degrees a radiator is switched off.
Oil Consumption
This graph shows the amount of oil that we have consumed in school over the past five years. We have managed to only consume 4,000L of oil this year as the weather was quite mild over winter.

Energy Monitors
Meet Farnham Schools Energy Monitors!! Their job is to ensure that all electrical appliances are switched off at the end of every day and ESPECIALLY on Friday evenings.
Energy Squad
Our energy squad do spotchecks to make sure that all doors are closed, lights switched off and that all electrical equipment is switched off during lunchbreak.

Electricity Readings
A few members of our committee have been taking record of our electricity readings each morning. We have created a graph to show how much electricity we are using each month.

Science Week  November 11th - 15th

During Science Week every class in Farnham did a lesson about energy which related to our Green Schools Project. We got wonderful ideas from the S.E.A.I (Sustainable Energy Association of Ireland). The Green Schools Committee asked Johnny from S.E.A.I to come to our school during science week to do some energy workshops with 2nd, 3rd and 5th class. All of the classes thoroughly enjoyed the workshops so we have asked Johnny to come back next term to work with 4th and 6th class. Have a look at some of Johnny's EXPLOSIVE experiments!!!!

First Class

In first class Ms Mc Carron introduced the children to Guzzler. She read a story about Guzzler which explained how he saves energy in his home and at school. The class did a 'Guzzler' activity after they listened to the story. They had to look at a picture and had to identify how energy is being wasted. First Class were able to recommend lots of energy saving tips!!!!

Green Code Competition

The Green-Schools committee have  organised a competition in order to pick our Energy Green code. Every class has been asked to write their own Green code.  The adults on the Green-Schools committee are going to pick the winning class. Have a look at some of the entries. The winner will be announced next week :)

Third Class

We all call the shots,
Reduce those watts!!

Fifth Class

If you want to be energy savers like us,
Here are some things that you really must:

Don't leave your tv on stand by
or your energy bill will fly high!

You really must turn off the lights,
If you have sight when it's bright!

Follow these rules for the Green Schools
And you will show little energy we use!

Senior Infants

Be polite, turn off the light
Especially last thing at night.
Flick the switch on the socket
Means more money in your pocket.
Close the doors, keep in the heat
Energy saving is really neat!!

Sixth Class

Do the earth a favour,
Be a power saver!

Fourth Class (Miss Leonard)

Fourth Class (Miss Mc Cooey)

It's not rocket science,
Turn off that appliance!!
First Class

Energy misused is not cool!

CONGRATULATIONS to Aoife Mulherin in sixth class as her Green- Code has been chosen as the overall winner. Hasiq in Miss Leonard's class received a special award for his original entry. We will all be learning our new Green code over the next few weeks :)

Exciting News!!!!!

Miss Corr received a letter from An Taisce today to say that we have been awarded our ENERGY GREEN FLAG!!!!!!!!! An inspector from An Taisce visited our school the day before our Easter holidays to inspect all of the work we have been doing for our Energy Flag. She met with 3rd class and asked them about what we have been doing, as a school, to reduce our energy consumption. Unfortunately, she did not get to meet with the committee as the students in the senior classes were doing tests. Nevertheless, she read through all of the information in our folder and had a look at our school website. She was very impressed with our Green Schools Committee and how the whole school had worked together to reduce our energy consumption. Miss Corr, Miss Connolly and the 6th class members of the committee will travel to the Helix in Dublin on May 20th to be presented with our flag. Well done to everyone involved, it is a fantastic achievement!!!!!!
Aaron O Connell and Kate Jackson collected the 'Energy Flag' at the Helix in Dublin. We will be raising our Energy Flag in October.
