Pictured below is: Clodagh, Emma, Paige, Amber-Dee, Erin, Nadia, Sarah, Cáit and Sasha! Thank you to their excellent trainer Gráinne!
Lunchtime Skipping!
After our SkipHop workshop in January, the children became more interested in skipping. As a result, the school invested in some skipping ropes for yard time and they have been going down a treat! There is a rota set up from Monday to Thursday and as we don't want anyone to miss out on Free Dance Friday! The playground leaders ensure that the right class has the skipping ropes on the correct day and that they are returned safely to the box afterwards.
Girls GAA
Gráinne, our SNA, and Ms.Costello, our 4th class teacher, have been training our girls GAA team at lunch times in order to prepare them for the Cumann na mBunscoil league coming up soon! Best of luck girls!
Playground Leaders in Action
5th Class have been doing an amazing job at being Playground Leaders for our Junior Infants, Senior Infants, First Class and Second Class. They ensure that everyone is up and moving for all of break! Junior and Senior Infants are now playing great games of football during break! The leaders also ensure that the correct class has the skipping ropes on the correct day. Good job 5th Class! :)
Soccer Blitz
Children from 5th and 6th travelled to Cootehill this week to participate in a soccer blitz! Below are pictures of the teams that went. Well done to everyone involved!
Easter Outdoor and Adventure!
Every class in the school had great fun participating in an Easter Egg Hunt on the week of the Easter holidays! Bags of letters were hidden under cones which were scattered all around the school grounds. The children worked in teams to discover what word their letters made. Of course, there was a race to see who got it first! Thankfully, every team and its members won an egg when they got the word right! :) A lot of fun was had by everyone!
Futsal Competition!
Children from 3rd and 4th class travelled to Cavan Leisure Centre on Friday with their teacher Ms.Costello and our principal Ms.Dolan, to take part in a Futsal competition and had great fun!
Skip-Hop Workshop
Lee Collinson-James came to visit us all the way from the UK to give the children from Junior Infants to Third Class a very cool skipping workshop on Friday 26th of January! Skipping is not as easy as we think but the children really persevered and started to see improvements straight away! Take a look at the fun below!

Santa Dash!!!!
Well done to everyone who braved the rain to dash around the school in their Santa hats! The Christmas music kept us motivated to keep running when we were getting tired!
First Class - Wall of Activity!
First Class have been trying so hard to be more active at school and to build up their 60 minutes of exercise each day. They have even went to the effort of presenting all they have done on a cool display in their classroom which they contribute to all the time! Good job guys!
Fundamental Skills
Junior Infants have been working on the fundamental skill of throwing and are coming on really well! Take a look below!
Rainy Day Breaks!
As we have had some bad weather at the moment, the children have been stuck inside at break time. However, this won't stop us from aiming to get our 60 minutes of exercise each day! Below are pictures and videos of some classes dancing between lessons!
Free Dance Friday!
With the help of our brand new portable speaker, lunchtime on Fridays is now much more fun! The children spend some time during the week in class preparing some great dance moves for Free Dance Friday!
Running Initiative
The 'Run around Cavan' challenge is well under way and the children are loving it. In this hot weather, it has been an excellent opportunity for classes to get outside and get some exercise between lessons! Some classes have run as far as local towns already! Good job everyone!
PARTNERSHIPS
Cavan Sports Partnership - Basketball
The children of 4th, 5th and 6th class were very lucky to have people from Cavan Sports Partnership come out and practice basketball skills with them and they also played a few games afterwards. The children learned a lot and had great fun!
Operation Transformation Workouts
We are loving the Operation Transformation 10@10 workouts and some days we tune in as Gaeilge! They are a great way to get active in the classroom and take a break from the books! :)

Triathlon - 6th Class
In January and February, 6th class worked with Triathlon Ireland to take part in triathlon training. A huge amount of hard work and effort went into the preparation and it went very well on the day. Well done 6th class! :)
Triathlon - 5th Class
Since September, 5th Class have been working with Triathlon Ireland to take part in triathlon training. They worked very hard in order to prepare themselves for the actual triathlon which took place on Wednesday 25th of October. They had a fantastic afternoon! Well done to all involved!
Stencil Fun on the Yard!
A huge thank you to the Parents Association who kindly organised for markings to be painted onto our yard using stencils! The children are really enjoying them!
Skipathon
November 2017
On Friday the 24th of November, children and staff across the school, took part in a Skipathon to raise money for Sean Reilly who is seriously ill at the moment. Sean attends Aughadreena NS but has four cousins in Farnham School and so we thought that it was important that we help out. €1200 was raised and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported so generously.
We thoroughly enjoyed skipping with ropes and hoops. We even learned some skipping rhymes. Check out our photographs and videos below!

ACTIVE SCHOOL WEEK
2018
Tuesday: Junior Infants and First Class tried out orienteering for the very first time! Junior Infants worked in groups of 3 and had so much fun finding all the shapes and recording them! Next time we might make it harder by adding some of our tricky words!!! :) First Class made it harder by adding Irish and Maths questions on theirs! Their committee members are going to make a new one for next week!
Have a look at both classes below!
Senior Infants were also spotted pulling some serious dance moves to out Drop Everything and Dance song 'Reach' by S Club 7!
Wednesday: 5th and 6th travelled all the way to Killygarry to participate in a Duathlon! Even in the scorching heat, they did a great job!
Thursday: On Thursday, James from Cavan Sports Partnership gave us a taster session of Tug of War! Every class participated and had such fun! Have a look at the antics below!
Friday: On Friday, all classes participated in Sports Day up on our pitch. The day began with races in each class to get the children warmed up for a full day of exercise! After that was over, each class went to their assigned station which they had 12 minutes at. The children loved all 9 stations! Station 1 was a novelty clothes race, where the children had to run up to a collection of funny clothes and put them on and run back to their team! That was a favourite of a lot of the kids. Station 2 was Tug of War which we were well prepared for after our taster session
the day before. Station 3 was novelty races such as three legged race and the sack race.
Station 4 was a cooperative hoola hoop game where we were holding hands in a circle and had to send the hoola hoop around the circle without breaking the circle. We also did some wheelbarrow races at this station too! Station 5 was the water relays which is always popular with the children! Station 6 was welly throwing which created a good few laughs! Station 7 was an interesting station as it saw the children really having to work as a team. Each child had a piece of guttering and had to join them up to allow a golf ball travel down through them without letting it fall. It involved a lot of team work but everyone did a great job! Station 8 involved the children being in 2 teams lying on the ground in 2 lines with their legs in the air while passing a beach ball from the top of the line to the bottom. Again, this involved a lot of team work. Finally, station 9, was the obstacle course which had tyres, bales of hay, nets, benches and hoola hoops! Plenty of fitness needed at this station! The sun shone all day and everyone had a fun and enjoyable day. We can't wait for next year already!
Sports Day - Slideshow 1
Sports Day - Slideshow 2
On Friday, children had to present their active homework that they completed throughout the course of the week!
Monday: This was the following Monday because of the bank holiday the week before. Monday was the end of Active School Week and it ended with a bang with the arrival of some parents for a Parents Vs Children Penalty Shoot Out! The parents were really put to the test with some strong kicks! Have a look below!
Previous Active School Weeks
Active School Week has been held in Farnham NS since 2015. Excellent fun was had over the last 3 years during Active School Week. Each year we have had a theme song that we used to 'Drop Everything and Dance.' Last year it was 'Can't Stop the Feeling' and Patricia our secretary kindly played it through the intercom at various stages throughout the week! The children loved getting out of their seats for a dance! In 2015 the song was The Macarena which was great fun! In 2016, we danced to Cotton Eye Joe.
In 2017, we were lucky enough to have a taster session from a local parent who came into play rugby with the children. Rugby was something that we hadn't explored before. We also started playing Rounders and 6th class participated in a Rounders league. A guy called Keith came out to play hurling with us which was interesting as that was another sport that we hadn't much experience of! The infants experimented in Yoga which was a great success.
Of course both teachers and students were delighted to be wearing their tracksuit for the duration of the week! Homework was also spiced up that week with the introduction of physical activity tasks being given!
Overall, we have really enjoyed our Active School Weeks over the last three years and are very excited about our upcoming one in June! The plans are well under way! Keep an eye out for some photos! :)
